General Questions

What is Musicianstool?

Musicianstool is a comprehensive collection of free, professional-grade music tools designed for musicians, producers, and DJs. Our tools include a chromatic tuner, BPM tapper, metronome, harmonic mixing wheel (Camelot wheel), chord progression charts, and much more. All tools are web-based, meaning they work directly in your browser without requiring any downloads or installations.

Are the tools really free?

Yes! All our core music tools are completely free to use. We believe in supporting the global music community by providing high-quality tools accessible to everyone, regardless of their budget. Our goal is to help musicians improve their craft without financial barriers.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is required to use any of our tools. Simply visit the website and start using whichever tool you need. We may offer optional account features in the future for saving preferences, but the core functionality will always remain free and accessible without registration.

Can I use Musicianstool on my mobile device?

Absolutely! All our tools are fully responsive and optimized for mobile devices, tablets, and desktop computers. Whether you're practicing with your phone propped up on a music stand or mixing on your tablet, our tools provide an excellent experience across all screen sizes.

Is Musicianstool available offline?

Currently, Musicianstool requires an internet connection to access. However, we're exploring Progressive Web App (PWA) functionality that would allow certain tools to work offline in the future. Stay tuned for updates!

Chromatic Tuner

Why does the tuner need microphone access?

Our chromatic tuner uses your device's microphone to detect the pitch of the sound you're playing. This is essential for the tuner to analyze the frequency of your instrument and display how sharp or flat you are relative to the target note. The audio is processed entirely on your device and is never recorded or transmitted anywhere.

What instruments can I tune with the chromatic tuner?

Our chromatic tuner works with virtually any instrument that produces a pitched sound, including guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, cello, wind instruments, and even your voice. For guitars and basses, we also offer preset tunings like Standard, Drop D, DADGAD, Open G, and more.

How accurate is the tuner?

Our tuner uses professional-grade autocorrelation pitch detection algorithms and displays accuracy within ±1 cent. For reference, the human ear typically can't distinguish differences smaller than 5-10 cents. When the display shows green (within ±5 cents), you're in tune for all practical purposes.

The tuner isn't detecting my instrument. What should I do?

First, ensure you've clicked 'Activate Tuner' and granted microphone permission. Play a single, clear note rather than multiple strings or a chord. Position yourself close to your device's microphone, and reduce background noise if possible. For electric instruments, consider using an acoustic amp or playing unplugged near the mic.

Can I change the reference pitch from A=440Hz?

Yes! Our tuner supports both A=440Hz (standard concert pitch) and A=432Hz (often preferred by some musicians for its warmer sound). You can toggle between these options using the A4 dropdown in the tuner interface.

BPM & Tempo Tools

How does the BPM Tapper work?

The BPM Tapper calculates tempo by measuring the time intervals between your taps. Simply tap along with the beat of a song using your mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen. The tool averages multiple taps to provide an increasingly accurate BPM reading. For best results, tap consistently for at least 8-12 beats.

How accurate is the BPM detection?

The BPM Tapper is highly accurate when you tap consistently. After 8+ consistent taps, you can expect accuracy within ±1 BPM. The key is maintaining a steady rhythm while tapping – the more consistent your taps, the more accurate the result.

What's the difference between BPM and tempo?

BPM (Beats Per Minute) is a specific numerical measurement of tempo. Tempo is the more general term for the speed or pace of music, and can be described either by BPM values or traditional Italian terms like Allegro (fast), Andante (walking pace), or Adagio (slow).

How does the Delay Calculator work?

The Delay Calculator converts BPM to milliseconds for various note subdivisions (quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted notes, triplets, etc.). This is essential for setting up time-based effects like delay, reverb pre-delay, and other rhythmic effects so they sync perfectly with your track's tempo.

Music Theory Tools

What is the Camelot Wheel?

The Camelot Wheel is a visual tool for harmonic mixing, primarily used by DJs. It organizes all 24 musical keys into a circular diagram where harmonically compatible keys are positioned next to each other. This makes it easy to find tracks that will mix smoothly together without key clashes.

How do I use the Chord Progression charts?

Our chord progression charts show you the diatonic chords available in each key, along with common progressions used in popular music. Select a key to see all the chords that naturally belong to it, along with their Roman numeral notation. You can then use these to write songs, understand existing songs, or improvise over backing tracks.

What are scale degrees and why do they matter?

Scale degrees are numbers assigned to each note of a scale (1-7 in a major scale). Understanding scale degrees helps you analyze chord progressions, communicate with other musicians, and understand the function of each note/chord in a key. For example, the V chord (5th degree) typically wants to resolve to the I chord (1st degree).

Can I export or download chord progressions as MIDI?

Yes! Our chord progression tool includes a MIDI export feature. You can select a progression and download it as a MIDI file that can be imported directly into any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, or GarageBand.

Technical & Privacy

Do you record or store my audio?

No, absolutely not. All audio processing happens locally on your device using JavaScript. When you use the tuner or vocal range finder, the audio data never leaves your device. We have no servers recording, storing, or transmitting your audio in any way.

What browsers are supported?

Musicianstool works best on modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. For audio features (tuner, vocal range), we recommend Chrome or Firefox for optimal microphone support. Make sure your browser is updated to the latest version for the best experience.

Why is the tuner not working in Safari?

Safari has stricter audio permissions than other browsers. Make sure you've granted microphone access (look for the microphone icon in the address bar). If issues persist, try using Chrome or Firefox, which typically have better Web Audio API support.

Is my personal data safe?

Yes. We collect minimal data and only for improving the user experience (like anonymous analytics to understand which tools are most popular). We never sell your data, and any personally identifiable information you provide (like through contact forms) is handled according to our Privacy Policy. See our Privacy Policy page for complete details.
